A child (birth to under 21 years of age) with a medical condition that requires ongoing nursing monitoring such as:

- congenital heart defects
- dysphagia
- hydrocephalus
- spina bifida
- colostomy
- tube feedings
- chronic asthma
- diabeties
- epilepsy + seizure disorders
- microcephalus
- stroke
- oxygen administration
- apnea monitoring
- chronic lung disease
- down syndrome
- failure to thrive
- shaken baby syndrome
- traumatic brain injury
- tracheostomy care
- ventilator dependent
